Down the Colorado

Above the canyons

From the ground you see one canyon at a time. From a small plane or helicopter you see how they all fit: the Green and Colorado braiding together, Island in the Sky floating over both, Arches scattered like keyholes. Thirty to sixty minutes, and the best light is early or late.

Then the sky takes over.
Moab sits inside some of the darkest skies left in the country. Stay out past the last shuttle and the Milky Way stands up over the fins, satellites drift between the arches, and a guide with a camera shows you how to keep it. The best nights are around the new moon.
Rope down where the light goes narrow.
Behind the big views, the rock splits into slots barely a shoulder wide. Rappel into the Medieval Chamber, downclimb a sculpted canyon, learn the ropework on real sandstone with a guide who has run it a hundred times. No experience needed for most of these.
The rock was built for riding.
Slickrock grips a tyre like nothing else, which is why riders fly in from everywhere. Take a guided lap on a mellow petroglyph loop, add an e-bike so the climbs stop hurting, or push onto the real singletrack. Bikes and shuttles are sorted for you.
The Colorado is the slow way to see it all.
Trade the dust for the water. A half-day float under Fisher Towers is calm enough for grandparents and grandkids in the same boat, the afternoon run adds enough whitewater to matter, and a sunset cruise ends the day with dinner and a light show on the canyon walls. The current does the work.

Some of the best rock is a short drive out. Island in the Sky and Dead Horse Point sit over the confluence, Goblin Valley hides a field of hoodoos, and the dinosaur tracks and rock art are hiding in plain sight along the way.

You cannot see all of Moab in a long weekend, but you can see the best of it in the right order. This is the run we would hand a friend rolling into town tonight.

Start in the arches
Beat the gate line into Arches at first light, walk out to Delicate Arch while it is still cool, then let a backcountry rig take you where the shuttle can’t. Easy day, big scenery.

Morning on Hell’s Revenge, either shotgun or your own UTV, then cool off on an afternoon float down the Colorado. The two things Moab does better than anywhere, back to back.
